After a nice 18 hour journey from Austria (Thank you to the nice cheap night busses), I am here in Frankfurt, Germany, getting ready for the marathon in the morning. This one has been n my marathon “to-do” list for the last 2 years. Mainly due to the finish line being inside a concert hall!
This whole race and holiday is my own treat for finally paying off the last of my debts. I have booked myself into a fancy hotel and have an amazing room on the 26th floor overlooking Frankfurt, which makes it hard not to relax looking out over the city! As im sitting here overlooking the city sunset, im thinking of the usual thoughts of how much more training that i should have done, and wondering how long it is really going to take me this time. I arrive early on Friday morning, so I have managed to have a good long rest after the mega traveling session. I also took chance of the early registration at the expo. It was probably one of the smaller expo that I have been to, which was surprising considering it was one of the big BMW races. I had been hoping to make lots of connections with hopeful sponsors but unfortunately only came away with one useful contact. But, at the end of the day one contact is better than none!
Today I took myself on a tour of the city, which I was pretty surprised about after arriving through the “grottiest” end of the city. The sun had come out and everywhere was bustling with tourists, or marathon runners just like me wanting to take in the sights. The center of the city is beautiful and filled with many of the old German style of building that you expect to see in the country. There seemed to also be 2 churches, dressed in gothic styles opposite each other on the river! I spent a good 4 hours walking the streets and along the old city wall being a snap happy tourist before stopping at an organic restaurant in one of the parks (I know, healthy right?!). Here i tucked into my usual pre-race meal of spaghetti carbonara and salad. Slightly healthy salad but with lots of pasta carbs for the next day.
What am I expecting from the race?
Well walking the city today it seems like it could be a very flat race, as flat as Berlin im not sure, but if it is the hopefully I could hit a good time. The weather is looking almost perfect, 12c with mixed sunshine and clouds, perfect for a marathon day! Lets just hope the wind stays down. My PB is 5:02:52, which is a long time compared to a lot of people but bare in mind I am a heavy unhealthy guy who has a severe dislike of training! If all goes well then I will hit a new PB but i will be happy with a time under 5.5 hours.
So here’s to tomorrow. Ill leave you with these snaps of today. My running number is 4048, although I cannot seem to find a tracker on the marathon website. Ill update you all tomorrow when i get back to the hotel!
